Taking God on Vacation (Wayne Sargent)

July 13, 2011

Summertime is here, as well as vacations and probable vacation trips.  It is often difficult, on a trip, to observe the Lord’s Day in worship and to find a sound church of Christ wherever we go.

Planning ahead to search out sound churches is very helpful.  There are church of Christ directories available in our church office.

Many just skip going to church as if we are on vacation from the Lord.  Paul exhorts and instructs Timothy as well as us in 2 Timothy 4:2 to be “ready in season and out of season.”  Paul is, of course, instructing Timothy to preach whether it is convenient or not and even when he was taking time for himself.  The principle is still there that we as Christians, wherever we are, whether on vacation, at work, or engaged in some type of recreation, need to be ready to give a reason (defense) for the hope within us (1 Peter 3:15), being willing to share Jesus as we live, in every occasion and everywhere we are.  We need to keep before us, as well, that just because we are away from our fellow Christians does not mean that we forget to be the example of Christian behavior we should be.

Sometimes when we leave our home congregation we also skip the need to contribute to its support as though we can be excused from our responsibility on the day or days we are gone.  What is needed is, if possible, to give your contribution in advance or make it up when you return.

Further, if we are camping or just unable to find a church nearby to worship with, it is important to set aside a time for study, prayer, singing, and the Lord’s Supper.  In these situations, the taking of the Lord’s Supper should be in a worship situation and not observed in an insincere manner.  It’s important to remember “where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst” (Matthew 18:20).

So, then, remembering Jesus when we are gone is important.

Youth Worship!

January 29, 2009

The evening of January 25, we were pleased to have our young Christian men conduct the worship service.

Austin Dean led singing, Dietrich Shockcor and Charlie Taylor led prayers, and Soya Bissau and Curtis Chapple brought the lesson.  Each of them did a wonderful job, and we are very proud of them!

Still in charge…

October 30, 2008

Psalm 46:1-3 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.”

Romans 13:1-5 – “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities.  For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.  Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.  For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil.  Do you want to have no fear of authority?  Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good.  But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.  Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience’ sake.”

God is in control today.  He’s always been in control.  He’ll be in control on November 4 and every day thereafter.  No person in history has ever been able to change that.

Next week’s election is important.  There’s no doubt about that.  Its outcome will affect each of us, for better or for worse.

No matter who you or I support in any of the upcoming contests or how our preferred candidates fare, though, we must remember that no leader of a secular government can ascend to power without being appointed by God.

That doesn’t mean we should automatically agree with whatever decisions our leaders make, but it does mean we must respect them as agents of His providence.

Matthew 5:14 records Jesus as saying, “You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”  He’s not speaking here to the Roman or any other secular officials.  Our political figures aren’t called to be the light of the world.  Christians are.  Next week’s winner will be responsible for the security and prosperity of a nation.  We’ll still be responsible for its souls.

Remember as you watch the votes being tallied Tuesday night that Jesus didn’t die for Republicans.  He didn’t die for Democrats.  He died for sinners.  We’re all in the same boat, and we’re all saved by the same blood.
